If you haven’t already played the title — and you have any interest at all in musical games — go! Now! Rock Band 2 is one of the best games of this era.

If you already own the title, consider picking it up for a clueless newb or beloved relative, along with a guitar controller (under $20, used, on Amazon — search for your platform of choice and ‘guitar’), and bust it out during the upcoming holiday. (For a low, low investment, you could be rocking AC/DC instead of making small talk on the couch.)

Note! … most game guitars can play all the music games on their platform, but check first. (For instance, the guitar from Guitar Hero: World Tour can handle Rock Band on the Xbox. The same guitar, from the same game, can’t handle Rock Band on the Wii.) Fortunately, Joystiq has a compatibility chart.
